Cosmetics and skin care products have become an important part of our daily life. The average teen uses 15 to 25 cosmetics per day and as I learned this morning, I am no different! I usually make use of 10 products daily without realizing that I was covered with sweet smelling, germ-killing, skin-softening chemicals.
In the world of cosmetics women are more often seen as the ones to use them then men, but nowadays men apply also cosmetics to freshen up their looks. However the cosmetic industry has many hidden secrets that misleads its consumers as It’s not only what you put in your body that’s important, it’s what you put on your body that’s just as important since our skin absorbs 64% of what is put on it directly into our blood stream!!!
Have you ever read the ingredients on the back of your shampoo bottle? How many of those ingredients can you identify or even pronounce???? Many of the ingredients found in shampoos, lotions, cosmetics, and other personal care products are loaded with toxic chemicals that we don’t even know about!!!!!
Death of animals: THE PRICE FOR BEAUTY
Recently scientists discovered that a particular company produced anti-aging cosmetics that worked in a very interesting way. In the commercial they claimed that their cream releases our faces from wrinkles and being tested on animals and some brands of other cosmetic products containing dibutyl phthalate, or DBP, a chemical linked to cancer in animals. Moreover such products used a lot of containers and packaging that are non-biodegradable. Will you pay for such product and even more - use it? Think twice before applying something to your skin hence we should care about what we are putting on our body and ask the cosmetic companies for clarification.
Hence by taking into consideration the drawbacks that lies in cosmetic products, I’m on the way of sensibilising my family members about the dangers of overuse of cosmetic products through modeling, and implementing new practices such as I started buying eco-friendly products instead of huge amounts of beauty items that are high in hazardous chemicals as well as making my own face pack and soaps at home itself, moreover I’m trying to do my own research in finding new tips on how can I make new items at home itself. Acting as a role model at home will enable me to meet my goal in eliminating all the cosmetics products at home, and encouraging gradually my family in adopting safe practices.
As such, I’ve started telling my friends at the campus, about the problem of toxic chemicals in cosmetics and how they can take action by eventually hosting our own Safe Cosmetics House Party where we can raise awareness in people about the dangers these items carry. The use of prompts can be a creative method on passing information to the community due to the fact that they will be attracted visually as individuals are influenced by other’s behavior in society hence this can have an impact in their lifestyle. Thus, by undertaking gradual changes in their routine, like producing their own cosmetics at home in making use of flowers and necessary left overs in the kitchen can save them both in terms of resources as well as it is more safe and hygienic. In the future they will be more conscious in seeing labels and ensuring that the packaging of the cosmetic product is recyclable before purchasing any item from the market.
It’s true that beauty products form a crucial part, but does this mean that we can’t love the Earth too????? A small conscious act of buying an eco-friendly brand of a cosmetic product goes a long way in protecting us and our environment - and you!!!!
